The Pulau Ubin Hornbill Conservation Project: Current State & Challenges

Yash Agarwal, Li Yixuan,Sable Ching Yan Ning, Celina Kaesar Meris Lumain, Sashakt Jaiswal

In recent years, with the continuous exploitation and malicious encroachment of resources in the process of production and life, the environment in which plants and animals that are common in the past have been subtly changed. The plants are on the verge of exhaustion and the animals are on the verge of extinction. The hornbill is one of them. The number of hornbills has dropped to 160 due to slashing and illegal hunting. This is already on the verge of extinction in the case of birds. The significance of protecting hornbills is that hornbills are iconic species that show the good ecology of hot rainforests. Known as “farmers of the forest”, hornbills play a crucial role in the spread and germination of the seeds from big-fruited forest trees. This helps in regeneration of the Singapore forests. The future management of these species will involve the improvement of the genetic diversity of the population with genetic studies about the species. There are rainforests with hornbills, and there are usually other colorful birds. Secondly, wildlife protection has a long way to go. In the era of globalization, bird watching and environmental protection are increasingly requiring a global perspective. Rare species are a valuable asset for all human beings, and the cost of wildlife conservation in developing countries is much lower than in developed countries (unfortunately, the cost of destruction is much lower). Putting a small amount of money that is inconspicuous can save an important species like the hornbill.
